The latest DLC, “Shadow of the Earth Tree,” brings new content to Elden Ring that players will soon be able to engage with, but before its release, fans are wildly discussing the DLC’s newest villain: Messmer the Impaler.
Who is the new villain? On February 21st, FromSoftware introduced their latest DLC for Elden Ring. A gameplay trailer not only revealed new items and armor, but also a new area, as well as bosses and a continuation of the story about the family of gods from the intermediate lands. The most interesting thing, however, is the DLC’s new antagonist: Messmer the Impaler.
According to the trailer, this red-haired god doesn’t think much of the Tainted and also looks like he’s running the shadowy realm of Elden Ring. Fans have now speculated wildly about where this creature comes from and they have come across an interesting detail.

Butterflies have already announced the antagonist
What did players find out? There is a lot of speculation on Reddit about Messmer’s origins. Many fans are certain that Messmer is the lost brother of Miquella (The God in Child Form) and Malenia (Goddess of Scarlet Blight). This is primarily indicated by the villain’s appearance and characteristic red hair. Theorists also believe that butterflies had already announced its presence at the time of release.
There are different species of butterflies, but each species is said to symbolize a god:
Messmer also has a golden eye, which was created either through madness or through the oath of the dragons. Fans believe he also wields the Seal of Dragons, which allows him to create invocations like the flames in the trailer.
The flames could also be a mixture of Rykard’s flames from House Vulkan and the blood flames of Mohg.
However, fans are sure that Messmer will be a tough boss and if this god actually comes from the same bloodline as Malenia, his fight will be on par with Malenia’s – if not harder.
What do fans think of the new DLC? Fans are already excited about Shadow of the Earthtree and can’t wait to take their first steps into the new area. The following voices come together on Reddit:
