White Carnation Prize winner Nona Salakory from Baarn passed away

At the Indies commemoration in Baarn last month, 72-year-old Salakory spoke extensively about her life as the daughter of a Moluccan veteran. “The war did end in 1945, but the Netherlands did not want to give up the colonies,” she said in an interview with RTV Utrecht. “There was a war there for years and people were treated very unfairly. Injustice can be forgiven and it can be made right. That is what I want to convey in my speech. We need the new generation in the Netherlands to get to know our shared colonial history , to put things right.”
