While players in Diablo 4 fear build variety, a competitor on Steam even brings weapon skill trees

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Path of Exile is one of Diablo 4’s biggest competitors. In April, the A-RPG gets a new update that allows players to give their weapons their own skill trees.

Which Diablo competitor is it? Path of Exile (PoE) is a popular action RPG and one of Diablo’s closest competitors. The Hack’n’Slay has been available for almost 10 years and is characterized, among other things, by an enormous and extremely complex skill tree on Steam.

In April, Path of Exile will receive the new “Crucible” update – on the 7th it will be released on PC, then on the 12th on consoles. The update gives players the opportunity to add new skill trees to their weapons.

Weapons with their own abilities

What’s the deal with weapon skill trees? To give your weapons their own skill tree, you channel one of your equipped weapons in a Crucible Forge that will be added to PoE with the Crucible update, thereby leveling it up.

Upgrading will give the selected weapon a new skill tree and new talents to unlock. However, the new abilities can only be obtained if you survive a fight against numerous opponents, because channeling the weapon summons monsters.

How many enemies come and how strong they are should depend on the time that the production process of the new skills takes. The longer the channel lasts, the more “dangerous and rewarding” the encounter becomes.

If you summon additional monsters during the process, they merge into even bigger opponents and give even more experience for your weapon’s new skill tree.

You can also visit the Forge of Titans in the endgame of the update and there, if you make it to the Forge, you can fuse two weapons, combining the skill trees of the two items to create even more powerful weapons.

“Like working on a 20 piece jigsaw puzzle”

What do Diablo players fear? Path of Exile is known for its complex skill tree. Diablo, on the other hand, takes it a little easier. For some fans of the game series, however, this is too easy.

On Reddit, some players describe the different skill trees as unimpressive and fear for the variety they have in creating different builds.

  • PhotonDecay: “Anyone else find the skill tree unimpressive? PoE might be too much for most gamers, but the tree in D4 is like working on a 20 piece jigsaw puzzle. Seems like your decision doesn’t really matter.”
  • Gasparde: “Now that I’ve played all 5 classes, I’m severely disappointed with the skill tree as a whole and the lack of synergy it seems to offer.”
  • Timooooo: “Over those 2 weekends I felt like more than half of each skill tree is just not worth investing points. […] Some skills are just useless and many passive points have little effect. Surprisingly, it was only with the Barbarian that I really had to think about it.”
  • The last comment alludes to the weakness of the barbarian. This is considered by many players as not strong enough. Finding a good build for the Barbarian requires some thought.

An example of a strong barbarian is the bleeding build by MeinMMO editor Maik Schneider:

Diablo 4: Barbar Build tears apart entire enemy groups, relies on bleeding and self-healing
