Which class is best to start with?

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a massive RPG that promises over 100 hours of play. So that you are not overwhelmed when creating the character at the beginning, MeinMMO will help you with a quick start tip.

The Classes of Baldur’s Gate 3:

Which class is the best to start with? Basically, you can start with any class that appeals to you. However, Baldur’s Gate 3’s character editor is so extensive that D&D beginners in particular can quickly become overwhelmed.

Fighters are generally considered to be the best class for getting started in D&D and thus also in Baldur’s Gate 3. The class is basically based on fighting with martial weapons, i.e. swords, axes, swords or bows. The most important attributes of fighters are:

  • Strength for heavy armour, swords, axes and shields
  • Dexterity for “finesse” weapons like rapiers, as well as most ranged weapons
  • constitution
  • wisdom or charisma
  • This makes you a real “all-rounder” as a fighter, with whom you can master the game without getting into too much trouble. At the same time, fighters offer a certain depth that you can delve into once you become more familiar with the game.

What makes fighters so good? Fighters are a versatile class that perform well in both melee and ranged combat. This makes the fighter a multi-talent that can fill most roles in a group. You choose one of 6 fighting styles:

  • Archery for ranged combat
  • Defense as a “tank”
  • Dueling, mainly for finesse weapons like rapiers
  • Fight with big weapons like two-handed axes
  • Bodyguard as support
  • Two-weapon combat as a “berserker” or “assassin” archetype
  • In particular, the ability to heal themselves immensely in combat makes fighters extremely tough and dangerous opponents. From level 2 you have several actions per round and get many of your abilities back after a short rest.

Since you can distribute the attribute bonuses of racial perks freely, the choice of race doesn’t matter and allows you to play in the way that suits you best right from the start. You can reset your points later in the game if you change your mind.

You have these options: In addition to the fighting styles that shape their role, fighters have different archetypes or “subclasses” from level 3. These allow you to change how exactly you want to play:

  • Champion: You learn a second fighting style and have more critical hits
  • Battlemaster: You can “study” opponents and thus provide bonuses in battle
  • Mystic Knight: Uses magic in addition to weapons
  • If you want to specialize further, you also have the option of combining classes. However, we only recommend this if you have already dealt with the system.

3 strong alternatives to the fighter

If the fighter is a little too “shallow” for you, or if you already have a clearer picture of what you want to play, there are 4 other classes that are particularly good to start with:

  • Barbarian: Is more of a hitter, but wears no armor. You dish out incredible damage but lack depth in the class.
  • Rogue: You deal more damage than most other classes with “sneak attacks” at range or in close combat, but you tend to weaken the longer the fight lasts.
  • Wizard: A basic caster class. You cast magic “spontaneously”, so you don’t have to resort to a complicated magic book, but have all the learned spells stored in your head.
  • Most of the other classes are a bit more complicated than those mentioned here. But since you don’t usually have to pay much attention to level 1, getting into Baldur’s Gate 3 is pretty easy anyway.

In addition, you won’t even reach the levels where it gets really cumbersome in D&D. Because the level cap of Baldur’s Gate 3 is quite low:
