A ranking carried out by the website l’Étudiant and based on several criteria such as ease of access to housing, air quality or even cultural offerings lists the favorite places for young people to study. Montpellier rises to the first place on the podium.
Living environment, cultural offerings, presence of leading schools, air quality, housing accessibility… The L’Étudiant website publishes classification cities where it is good to study in France. At the top of the podium, the city of Montpellier which obtains a score of 99 out of 121, and which stands out for its offer of free public transport for all residents. This measure presented as “social and ecological” by the mayor Michaël Delafosse was introduced in December 2023. Recommended by 94.1% of students, Montpellier is also one of the cities which has “very good” access to health services and a dynamic employment rate.
Next comes Rennes, with a score of 91 out of 121. The Breton capital rises to second place in this top, above all for its “high density” of training offers (1351 in the urban unit in 2024 per 100,000 inhabitants) and for its high cultural offer. Toulouse and Caen come in tied for third place, with a score of 90 out of 121. The pink city, which has more than 120,000 students, is praised for the wealth of its cultural offer and for the diversity of its local initiatives to make students’ daily lives easier (culture card, social assistance, specific student reception operations, etc.). As for the capital of Calvados, its main asset lies in its direct financial aid schemes.The city offers preferential rates to encourage its students to take part in sports and offers assistance with housing, driving licenses, mobility and various social assistance schemes in general.“, specify the authors of the ranking.
The other cities in the ranking are (in order) Grenoble, Angers, Besançon, Lyon, Strasbourg and Nantes. Grenoble and Angers stand out in particular for their air quality, judged to be “very good”, while Nantes stands out for its strong employment dynamism, the rate of which has climbed by 22.13% in the space of ten years (between 2011 and 2021).
