Microsoft announced that it has officially decided to close the Xbox 360 store on July 29, 2024.
The Xbox 360 launched the seventh-generation consoles in 2005 and still goes down in history as Microsoft’s best-selling video game console. The Xbox 360 had been ahead of the PS3 for most of that era, having an amazing collection of games that are still fondly remembered today.
Xbox 360 Store’s digital purchase feature is disabled
Even though the Xbox 360 dates back two generations, there are still many people who enjoy playing the games of this console. In fact, many Xbox 360 games are playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S consoles thanks to the backward compatibility program. However, in addition to many Xbox 360 games that can be played backwards compatible, there are also many games that can only be played on Xbox 360. Unfortunately, fans will lose the ability to purchase these games digitally starting next year.
The Xbox 360 digital store will close on July 29, 2024, and from that date on, players will no longer be able to purchase new games, DLCs or other content for the console digitally, including movies and TV shows. The Movies & TV app will also shut down completely. This means that players will not be able to watch any movie or TV show content they purchased on the device that day. This is pretty sad news for Xbox 360 fans.
Previous purchases will be available for download
Gamers will still be able to download previously purchased content, although digital game purchases will no longer be available on Xbox 360 as of July 29, 2024. The shutdown does not affect Xbox One or Xbox Series X/S consoles. This means backwards compatible Xbox 360 games are still available for purchase on Microsoft’s newer platforms. Microsoft will also continue to keep Xbox 360 multiplayer services online for a future period of time.
As for movies and TV content, they’re still viewable on Windows 10+ PCs, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. So even though Xbox 360 players lose the ability to see the content on the console, they will still be able to have all the content in their digital library.
