The president had promised, in 2020, the opening of a “House of press cartoons”, in particular in tribute to the victims of the Charlie Hebdo attacks. The Minister of Culture plans an inauguration in the coming years.
The “House of Press Cartoons” promised by Emmanuel Macron should open its doors in 2027, according to the Minister of Culture. The president announced it during his wishes to the press in 2020, and had promised an opening in “two or three years” in 2022. The opening was finally postponed, as Rachida Dati announced on her account X, January 4.
“On January 7, 2015, the attack against Charlie Hebdo and the freedom to write, to think, to draw, took the lives of 11 victims. In 2020, President Emmanuel Macron announced that a press cartoon house would be created based on an idea by Georges Wolinski [victime de l’attentat, NDLR] taken up by his wife Maryse”, writes the minister. “The press cartoon is an elaborate and precious form of democratic impertinence that we must defend.”
What will this house consist of?
“In 2025, the commitment of the President of the Republic is kept!”, greets Rachida Dati. The architectural project will be presented to the orientation council on February 7, 2025, promises the minister, who adds that the financing project will be under her authority as well as that of the Ministry of Culture. “This press cartoon house will be a place of memory in memory of those who fell in the service of freedom of expression, the freedom to draw, to caricature. It is up to us not to forget them.” Emmanuel Macron had considered opening this house near Notre-Dame de Paris. The minister did not allude to its location.
