Thomas Ravelli is one of Swedish football’s best.
And Diego Maradona was one of the absolute best in football history.
We will never forget when the profiles were brought face to face and the Swedish goalkeeper made the big star laugh.
So many unforgettable sports moments that Thomas Ravelli has given Swedish football. He won a lot of SM gold and played big in the Champions League with IFK Göteborg and in the Swedish national team jersey he has written unforgettable history.
Icon Ravelli
Because no one forgets what Ravelli did in the summer of 1994 when Blågult gilded an entire nation and created happy memories that live on to this day. The bronze in the WC 94 is hard to beat when it comes to ranking Swedish sports’ greatest moments of all time.

Since that championship, the iconic WC 94 team has reunited several times to play exhibition matches around the country. This was also the case in 2006 when the Swedish legends were to meet Argentina in a much talked about event in the Globe.

Stopping Maradona
Because the Argentines had a certain one Diego Maradona with him to Sweden. The late great star what the big poster name and the stands were filled to the brim to see one of the world’s absolute best of all time.

Ravelli has also revealed in interviews that the Swedish players were instructed to take it easy on Maradona during this stunt match. But that didn’t stop the Swedish goalkeeping icon from absolutely brilliant between the posts and one save in particular (see the one below) has been given new life today, 16 years later.

Praised: “Class”
Maradona was given an open shooting position and instinctively went for the volley but Ravelli managed to get the lateral move perfectly and got a hand up for a spectacular one-handed save, see the save below.

But Ravelli also had to capitulate on one occasion when Maradona outwitted the Swede and scored with his hand(!). The Swede was also on the notes straight away and managed to make Maradona laugh with his rapping Gothenburg humour.
Directly after the goal with his hand, Thomas Ravelli shouted two completely clever words to Diego Maradona: “Not again!”. It is Ravelli himself who published the video of his rescue on Instagram and among the comments we find current national team goalkeeper Robin Olsen.
“Legends”, he writes.
“Class is permanent,” writes another.
“The wall,” writes a third.
