[Mis à jour le 16 mars 2022 à 20h45] It was a mistake that almost cost the victory of Moonlight at the Oscars. The 2017 American awards ceremony will be remembered for a long time. Everything was going wonderfully before the Best Picture Oscar was awarded, usually closing the ceremony with great fanfare. But the remitters, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, mistakenly announce that the prize goes to La La Land. The film crew goes on stage first, before the error is corrected: “No, there is an error! Moonlight, you have the Oscar for best film! It’s not a joke!” announces one of the producers of the film La la land after the team begins their acceptance speech. Moonlight is indeed the winner of the Oscar for best film 2017.

The general cacophony then reigns on the set of the Oscars, and we remember this ceremony more for this quack than for the victory of Moonlight. But how could such an error have occurred? We then learn that there was an inversion of the envelopes: earlier in the evening, Emma Stone won the Oscar for Best Actress for La La Land. It is this envelope that is given to Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway. The mention of Emma Stone on the paper disturbs Warren Beatty, who gives the envelope to Faye Dunawaywhich deduces that La La land received the award. An error without great consequence which however caused a stir at the end of the evening, as we can see below in this explanatory video from the presenter of the evening Jimmy Kimmel.

Synopsis – Chiron, an African-American teenager, lives in an underprivileged area of Miami. He is in search of sexual and social identity. The story follows his journey through his coming of age by focusing on three stages of his life, while the drug trade is raging in Florida.

Moonlight is directed by Barry Jenkins who previously signed “Medicine for Melancholy” and episodes of the TV series “The Leftovers”. The screenplay is adapted from an autobiography written by American playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney. In the cast, Trevante Rhodes (“Westworld”), Ashton Sanders (“The Retrieval”) and André Holland, seen in “Selma”. Produced by brad pitt, this feature film was selected at the Toronto International Film Festival and at the Telluride Film Festival. Nominated 8 times for the Oscars, Moonlight was hailed with three prizes including the prize for Best Film opposite La La Land, but also Best Adaptation and Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Mahershala Ali.
