Sven Tumba was a real player. He was the charismatic hockey player who charmed everything and everyone, and who dominated in everything he tried. Tumba certainly broke through on ice, but he was also the person who struck a huge blow for water skiing and golf in Sweden.
Was mourned by an entire country
Sven Tumba was perhaps Sweden’s first real fixed star, and it was all thanks to hockey. Tumba was so good that he was offered a contract by the Boston Bruins in the NHL, but since it meant that he was not allowed to play with Tre Kronor, he kindly and firmly declined. Tumba stayed in Sweden, continued with his ideas and his companies, and there were many of them.
Tumba is one of Sweden’s biggest sporting profiles ever, and few have been as popular. When he died, in 2011, many mourned.
– Tumba had a special personality, he was not afraid to be seen. He was a funny profile and it was fun to get to know him, Peter Forsberg told Expressen at the time of the death.

Incredible question for Foppa
Peter Forsberg then told a perfectly clever story about the first time the two stars met. The two hockey icons both had a keen interest in golf, and when they met for the very first time, Forsberg was new to the NHL.
– He looked at me and asked: Are you Foppa? When I answered yes, I remember him saying: Yes, are you almost as good as me…?, said Foppa.
Sven Tumba was also Mats Sundind’s big idol, and that is not particularly strange. Tumba was the one who almost single-handedly made Sweden such a hockey-crazy country.
– Sven was an inspiration. He was the trailblazer who made ice hockey a national affair. He was a great role model for me, said “Sudden”.
