He approached Ronaldo to take a picture.
But he left sad.
Peter Crouch and Ronaldo were not exactly alike on the pitch, neither in physics nor style of play. Ronaldo was the prodigy who averaged almost more than one goal per game already as a teenager in Europe, and who won the World Cup and played in the world’s biggest clubs.
The meeting with Ronaldo
Had it not been for all the injuries, many believe that Ronaldo would have been the best striker of all time, but he is still in the discussion about that title. Peter Crouch, on the other hand, was not as technical, and not as fast. He did not have as good shots either, but he was tall. And the main game led to games in big clubs like Liverpool and Tottenham.
Crouch, however, was a big profile alongside the pitch, during the years as a player – but above all after. Today, he is a popular expert on television, and he is not shy about offering beautiful stories from the time in the absolute top of world football. Crouch is well known – but for Ronaldo he was totally unknown.
Got the dreams shattered
Crouch should be easy to recognize, but when the Englishman saw Ronaldo during a holiday trip to Ibiza, things did not go as he had hoped.
– I saw him on the beach. He was busy pouring in beer, at the same time as he had an ashtray that balanced on his stomach. Every time he finished a drink, the supermodel he was with went away and fetched a new one for him, Crouch said.
At least Crouch did not want to let the moment pass, and he went forward to ask for a selfie – hoping to be reasonably recognized.
– The chance to get a picture with him was too good to be true, so I went there hoping he would say: “Oh, you are Crouch!”, But he had no idea who I was.
– The picture was taken in any case, and I left without him having any knowledge that I was a football player.
