Stefan Schwarz is one of the toughest ever in Swedish football.
He never backed down from a melee and always took the fight to the grass.
One particular such moment is when he made David Beckham leave the pitch in tears.
There were 69 international matches and 6 goals in the Swedish national team in the years 1990-2001 for the legendary midfielder Stephen Schwarz. Where the big highlight is, of course, the unforgettable summer of feats in 1994 when he was part of saving a historic WC bronze in the USA.
Hard Schwarz
Schwarz will go down in history as one of the toughest in Swedish football ever. He always gave his all on the turf and didn’t budge an inch in the melee.
It really hurt to face number 6 in the blue-yellow national team uniform. Just ask the world star David Beckham who will probably never forget the day 5 June 1999 when he was pitted against real Swedish steel.
The studs first
The match between Sweden and England at Wembley ended 0-0 and apart from the fact that it was a vital point which then led Sweden to European Championship 2000, the clash is most remembered for the brutality on the grass. The European Championship qualifying match was not exactly well played and there were several times when studs were aimed at body parts.
The English took the initiative right away with the ugly game and set early Paul Scholes the sole of the foot with full force i Håkan Milds What. That caused fellow midfielder Schwarz to get really fired up and fight with the Englishman, who was later shown the red card and left the match in front of 75,000 crazy Brits in the stands.
Beckham cried
But Schwarz was not satisfied there and also went after the fixed star Beckham. The Swedish rawhide bet hard against England’s “Golden Boy” not just once, or twice, but four times during the match, see the tackles in the video below.
Must be some of the meanest football world has seen in brutal spot marking and several times it was the studs who counted first. Beckham then had to leave the game in tears and was unable to complete 90 minutes after Schwarz’s consistent manglings, while the Swede finished the game with just one yellow card.
That day he learned that you don’t mess with Stefan Schwarz on a football field.
