When Stefan Schwarz and Joachim Björklund teamed up in the most brutal slaughter of Englishmen in football history

Stefan Schwarz and Joachim Björklund were two tough men in the Swedish national football team.
There was no question of entering half-heartedly into the melee on the field.
It became particularly clear in Sweden’s meeting with England during the European Championship in 1992.

The biggest success for both of them is of course the unforgettable summer of 1994 when Sweden won the WC bronze in the USA. For the midfielder Stephen Schwarz there were a total of 69 international matches and 6 goals between 1990 and 2001, while the center back giant Joachim Björklund represented 78 international matches between 1991 and 2001. However, there were no goals for the skilled center back from Växjö.

Played tough

Stefan Schwarz has gone down in national team history as one of Sweden’s most physically playing players – but Joachim Björklund is not far behind.

A match that particularly highlights what it could look like when they were both on the move is the meeting with England during the European Championship at home in 1992, see the video below. Sweden turned around and won 2–1 after a goal by Janne Eriksson and Thomas Brolin.

But we also remember how Schwarz and Björklund went hard on the English, who were made to feel alive when the two Swedes dished out hard tackles.

Offered flights

Both Schwarz and Björklund invited the Englishmen on a couple of flights, see the clip below. Not least Andy Sinton who received a brusque treatment from Björklund through a serious tackle with the sole first – the Swede, however, had to remain on the field.

Also Tony Daley got to feel what it could be like to face Sweden since Stefan Schwarz flew into a duel with the studs first. A tackle where he also managed to bring down his own teammate. Schwarz also had to stay on the field and got away with a yellow card.

Tomas Brolin decided the match in the final minutes – and perhaps it was precisely Schwarz and Björklund’s tough play that gave the Swedes the extra spark that made them manage to turn around and win?
