Snapchat is enriching its offer with a new Lens, an animated filter in augmented reality, specially dedicated to sign language. The idea is to encourage users of the social network to learn American Sign Language through small fun activities.
This new experience was led entirely by deaf and hard of hearing members of Snap, in partnership with startup SignAll. The Lens in question learns, for example, to spell his name and to practice with sign language through relatively simple and instinctive little games.
SignAll’s technology allows hand tracking to recognize the right signs and help to learn this very special language. For the moment, however, it only recognizes sign language in English. You should know that there are very big differences between sign languages, depending on the country and the languages spoken. But it is obvious that the objective is to eventually initiate a maximum number of people in the world.
Snap had already opened up to this universe last year. In September, on the occasion of the International Week of the Deaf, Snapchat offered its users new tools to show its users how to translate a few words into American Sign Language.
