When Sami children get to decide: Playground with a “Reindeer”

The new Ripan/Györame playground with a Sami theme will start construction for the summer in Ursviken in Skellefteå.

Prior to the construction, Skellefteå Municipality held two consultations with Sami children, where the result was, among other things, that a so-called “Reinhörning” will be the focus of the playground.

– It was a good start to start with a playground for the children. They really are our future, says Filip Palukka, vice-chairman of the community planning board.

“Preschool with a Sami department”

Skellefteå municipality became a Sami administrative municipality in January earlier this year. During the spring, the municipality also opened a new preschool with a Sami section.

The Sami-themed playground will be the next step in the work to make the Sami population visible in the municipality.

– I think it is extremely important that the national minorities and especially our indigenous population are also represented, says Filip Palukka.

“It is the majority society’s responsibility”

– We have a responsibility as a majority society to make our national minorities visible and that you really get the opportunity to practice your culture and also in the future also your language, says Palukka.

The playground is expected to be ready next summer.
