Patients receiving respiratory support in almost every room, full beds… The images almost remind us of the days of the pandemic. Pneumonia cases, which started in November, are increasing. In recent months, many people in Istanbul have fallen ill with pneumonia. One of the most consulted hospitals in Istanbul is Yedikule Chest Diseases Hospital. The hospital’s emergency department and inpatient services are always full. Pneumonia mostly targets the elderly with chronic diseases.

“THE PATIENT IS BEING DISCHARGED, ANOTHER PATIENT IS BEING ADMITTED FROM THE EMERGENCY”

According to the news on Habertürk TV; Chest Diseases Specialist Assoc. Dr. Elif Yelda Niksarlıoğlu said, “In patients with pneumonia, a shorter cough begins. We see it a little more frequently in people over the age of 65. This circulation is quite fast, there are no empty beds. The majority of patients who come to our emergency department are hospitalized. In my ward, the patient is discharged, then another patient is admitted to the emergency room immediately after his room is cleaned. This is the season when our hospital is particularly busy with pneumonia. It can continue until March. There may be a need for intensive care. “Oxygen deficiency may develop or when there is severe pneumonia,” he said.

Here, the treatment period for patients lasts an average of 10 days. After a patient vacates a room, another patient is admitted on the same day.

Talking about the symptoms of pneumonia, Assoc. Dr. Elif Yelda Niksarlıoğlu, “We do not usually see pneumonia in a person who has been coughing for 1-1.5 months. In newly diagnosed cases of pneumonia, there may be some complaints such as cough that lasts for a few days, which we usually call acute, fever, and expectoration, especially colored sputum.” He stated:
