Jesper Blomqvist is one of the few Swedes to have won the Champions League.
But he also remembers how he lost himself completely in England.
– “What the hell are you doing?”, several teammates shouted, says Blomqvist in an interview with SportExpressen.
Few Swedish footballers can measure up Jesper Blomqvist great achievements during his career. The northerner had his big breakthrough in the big club IFK Gothenburg in the 90s and would then leave his mark in some of the world’s biggest clubs.
Milan & United
There were five SM golds on Swedish soil, four with Blåvitt and then the fifth when he returned home again and played for Djurgården. After impressing in the Champions League with IFK Göteborg, a big move to Milan awaited.

Then the transfer load went to Parma, which was teeming with big names in the late 90s, and then a dream came true when legendary Manchester United came calling. Blomqvist was part of the mighty 1998/99 season when United went all the way and won the treble of Premier League title, FA Cup title and then the unforgettable Champions League title.

Jesper’s mistake
What have we forgotten? Yes, of course Jesper Blomqvist was also in the team when Sweden won the historic WC bronze in 1994. But of all the big teams he played with and in all the big arenas, there is a real favourite.
– Old Trafford is one of the best. I think of that first. The Nou Camp immediately became a favorite arena for me as well. There is a great atmosphere at Anfield Road. And at San Siro, of course. I’d have to say The Dell too, Southampton’s old stadium. It felt like the audience was sitting half a meter from the sideline there. We had to drink tea in the break and we could barely fit in the dressing room. It was a real classic English arena, he says in an interview with SportExpressen.

But alongside all the great successes, there is also a real blunder from the Swede’s career. It is from the time in England when he was taught how much emotion there is in football and how great the rivalry actually is.
– I have experienced Everton-Liverpool and Milan-Inter. In these derbies there are very hot feelings. I made a real miss at Everton once. We were due to face Liverpool around Christmas and I came to a training session a few days before in a red shirt. Then I had to learn what applied the hard way, says Blomqvist, who only spent one season at Everton, to the evening newspaper.
– “What the hell are you doing, Jesper? You can’t have red on you,” shouted several teammates.
