Glenn Strömberg is one of Swedish football’s big profiles.
And he has played against some of the best players in the world.
But he never forgets when he got the chance to play alongside Diego Maradona himself.
Already as a teenager he was recruited Glenn Stromberg to IFK Göteborg from small Lerkils IF. It would also be a huge success right away when the tall midfielder helped “Blåvitt” to a historic double in 1982 with both SM gold and the Uefa Cup title.
Glenn’s career
He then followed the coach Sven-Göran Eriksson out in Europe and to the Portuguese big club Benfica. But just one season later, the move moved on again, this time to Italy.

Strömberg signed for Atalanta and it would be a lifelong love for the Swede has not left the city of Bergamo since. The Gothenburg native became immensely popular with Atalanta fans and Strömberg was a key player for many years in the world’s best league, Serie A.

Strömberg’s words
He played against some great teams and faced some of the world’s best footballers of all time. The toughest team to face in Italy was of course a given.
– Napoli at their best. Then I remember a tricky away game in Serie B against Avellino. As we warmed up on a gravel pitch, little boys were shooting slingshots at us. It hurt like hell. It was a short warm-up, haha, says Glenn in an interview with SportExpressen.
Above all, it was about a special player in Napoli who was extremely difficult to face and Strömberg also singles him out as the very best he has met during his career.
– Diego Maradona, during my first years in Italy, when he won the league with Napoli. He was unbelievably good and it was also noticeable when we played a charity match together many years later, he admits in the interview.

Maradona’s show
The exhibition match was played in Bergamo and Glenn Strömberg got the chance to play in the same team as Diego Maradona. Then the Swede really took the chance and gave it his all on the pitch – and even surprised the Argentine icon.
– Most of the players took it quite calmly. But I was in my stadium and ran into hell, says Glenn to the evening newspaper and remembers the words of the late Maradona to this day.
– “Stråmberg, Stråmberg – just keep running. Then you get the ball,” said Maradona. It was absolutely crazy. I ran. And he fit the bill. He pulled the ball 30-40 meters and it just landed at my feet – every time. I have never seen such a technical player.

It was a rarely seen display that an untrained Maradona and a willing-to-run Strömberg offered that day. A match that “Stråmberg” will never forget, when he got to play alongside a god-given world star.
