“When eating, my brother has to order”

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

As one of the biggest streamers on German Twitch, Maximilian “Trymacs” Stemmler (28) is live in front of thousands of viewers almost every day. He actually comes across as confident and self-confident. But that’s probably not always the case privately: in a stream he talked about his own shyness.

What stream was that? Trymacs responded to a video by his brother Nicolas Stemmler, who runs a YouTube channel called How to be Human, where he discusses psychological issues. This time it was about introverts and extroverts.

Trymacs suddenly recognized himself.

Trymacs prefers to send his brother ahead in the restaurant

Where did Trymacs recognize himself? In his video, the YouTuber cleared up a common misunderstanding: introverts are not necessarily more shy than other people. Shyness, on the other hand, is actually a type of social anxiety, making you feel tense and uncomfortable with social interactions.

At this point, Trymacs stops the video: “I’ve got it, I’ve got it full blast.”

How is that expressed? Adding that his viewers wouldn’t understand, the streamer describes various dining out situations:

  • In the past, when he went out to eat with his brother, he always had to order a drink for him – and that’s still the case today: one look would be enough for his brother to know that he should order a new Coke for them both – even if he did there is still something in his own glass.
  • When it comes to steak, too, Trymacs would rather accept wild broccoli as a side, which he doesn’t really like, than talk to the waiter more than is absolutely necessary, and ask for more beans instead.
  • In short: The streamer just has “zero point zero buck” to somehow talk to strangers.

And indeed, just a few seconds later in the video, his brother cites him as an example of shyness. You can watch the whole video on YouTube, we included Trymacs’ reaction here:

    Viewers feel understood

How is that received? First of all, it may seem funny to some that Trymacs, who has been watching an average of 20,000 people at the same time in the past 7 days (via sullygnome), is so reluctant to talk to strangers away from the camera – after all, that’s basically his job.

But many viewers can also identify with it – or have been in the situation themselves of having to take over such conversations for others. That such a big Twitch streamer addresses something that many have to do with is well received:

I think it’s good when a man talks about it in public. Especially as a man, society quickly condemns you if you don’t stand up to the front. Should make a lot more people aware of this, for everyone in general, but especially for us men, with the underlying pressure behind it.

By the way: even if introversion and shyness are not related, Trymacs classifies itself as both introverted and shy. On a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is introverted and 10 is extraverted, he gives himself a 2.
