Douglas Murray is one of the toughest and most physical Swedish players we have seen.
When it came to close combat, he didn’t back down from anyone.
Not even for Chicago Blackhawks badass Dustin Byfuglien – who got to experience what it was like to face Murray.

Douglas Murray made a name for himself in the NHL through physical play and zero respect. But it took a while before the defender from Bromma made it to the top of his career. He started in Djurgården’s junior team before moving to North America as a 17-year-old. Once there, it was first college hockey, AHL before he finally got the chance in the San Jose Sharks in the NHL in the 2005/2006 season.

The meeting with the bastard

However, he was not a further scoring machine, but rather became known for his tackles and his uncompromising style of play. And speaking of tackles, Douglas Murray has handed out a whole bunch over the years.

Not least in the meeting between the San Jose Sharks and the Chicago Blackhawks in January 2010. The Chicago team included the American giant Dustin Byfuglien, who with his barely two meters and 120 kilos was impossible to handle. It was believed. But in San Jose there was a certain Douglas Murray who wanted otherwise.

Byfuglien, or “Big Buff” as he is called, is classed as one of the league’s toughest in modern times. But it was not something that Douglas Murray attached any great importance to.

Byfuglien received a pass in the middle zone, but was not alert or prepared for the rock-hard Swedish defender to appear behind his back. “Big Buff” had no chance when Murray put in his tackle, and got a real flying ride in front of an almost shocked crowd.
