One of the greatest appeals of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that all stories closely related to each other are. After more than a decade, however, we have now reached the point where the individual MCU stories no longer appear chronologically one after the other. The best example is Black Widow.
We’ve been waiting for a solo film starring Scarlett Johansson for years. When it finally came to the cinema in the summer of 2021, it quickly became clear: it was exactly this film on the MCU timeline, some prior knowledge is necessary. Because we are dealing here with a prequel and a sequel in one.
When does Black Widow take place in the MCU timeline?
Black Widow plays between Captain America 3 and Avengers 3.
That’s the simple answer. Now let’s go into detail.
The plot of Black Widow follows directly on from the events of Captain America 3: Civil War. Natasha Romanhoff aka Black Widow is on the run because she is Sokovia Accords on the registration and regulation of superheroes. Now she is being hunted by Lieutenant General Thaddeus Ross. At the end of the film, the arc to Avengers 3: Infinity War is established.
When does Black Widow’s prologue take place?
When we take a closer look at the film and the MCU timeline, things get a bit more complicated. Black Widow comes up with a prologue that tells us kidnapped to 1995. So the first minutes of the film are set in the same year in which Captain Marvel takes place. After the opening, a jump in time of 21 years catapults us back to the present, where the action begins with the escape.
When does Black Widow’s post-credit scene take place?
Black Widow’s post-credit scene takes place after Avengers 4: Endgame.
Danger, spoiler: Yelena visits the grave of her foster sister, Natasha, who died in Infinity War. She learns from Valentina Allegra de Fontaine that Clint Barton aka Hawkeye is supposedly responsible for her death. This storyline is taken up in Hawkeye, where Yelena appears from the 4th episode.

What will happen next in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
There are two more big MCU projects awaiting us this year.
