Friction tires, or studless winter tires, are becoming more and more popular, and have the great advantage that they don’t wear as much on the road as traditional studded tires.
However, if you want maximum grip on winter road conditions, studded tires are still the right way to go. However, due to how hard the studded tires wear on the roads, they are not allowed to be used all year round.

Then you can change to studded tires
Changing to studded tires is permitted from October 1, 2024. This spring, the critical date for switching back to summer tires is April 15.
Outside of these dates, driving on studded tires is not permitted. The exception is according to police website if there are or are expected to be winter road conditions.

When you are allowed to have studded tires on your car, the dates you have to keep an eye on are not the only dates when winter approaches.
If you live far south in Sweden, or are just a little late with changing tires, you also have to keep track of the last date when it is allowed to drive on summer tires.
According to the police website, you must drive on winter tires between December 1 and March 31, as long as winter road conditions prevail.
However, if there are no winter road conditions, it is permitted to drive on summer tires even between these dates.
