When Börje Salming pointed out a young Nicklas Lidström in the dressing room – and said the most powerful words

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

1970 was the first time sports journalist Peter Wennman met Börje Salming, when he changed Kiruna AIF for Brynäs.
And Wennman also remembers what it was like during the 1991 Canada Cup.
It was the time when Salming paid tribute to Nicklas Lidström and called him “the next Börje Salming”.

Peter Wenman is a long-time, and now retired, sports journalist. He has extensive experience, and has, among other things, written the book about the iconic Swedish football coach Sven-Göran Eriksson called “Svenni’s war” which was published in 2006. A book that dealt with the coach’s existence as the national team captain in the English national team.

Powerful tribute

Peter Wennman was also present during that unforgettable moment Börje Salming was celebrated during the Canada Cup in 1976, a moment that was named the “Moment of the Ages” during the hockey gala in Avicii Arena earlier in the fall.

But there is also another memory of Börje Salming that Wennman remembers with great fondness. It is about the Canada Cup in 1991, where shortly after the semi-final loss to Canada, Börje spoke about himself in the third person for the first time, and delivered a powerful tribute to a certain Nicklas Lidström.

“Next Börje Salming”

In the match, Börje Salming formed a back pair with Nicklas Lidström, who was in his 20s at the time.
– I remember the Canada Cup. Sweden had gone out against Canada despite a really good match, and afterwards in the dressing room Börje talked about himself in the third person for the first time, says Wennman according to Aftonbladet.

He continues:
– He pointed to his young back partner and said: “Here’s your next Börje Salming”. That guy was Nicklas Lidström. Ask him about it, I think he remembers.
