It is soon time for EU elections, which are one of four general elections in Sweden, together with the parliamentary elections, the regional elections and the municipal elections.
Below decks News24 out some common questions and thoughts ahead of the upcoming EU elections in 2024.
Why should you vote in the EU elections?
A total of 705 members sit in the European Parliament, where decisions are made on EU laws. These laws – which can apply to everything from the environment and the economy to immigration and social policy – in turn affect the citizens of EU member states.
Voting in the election is thus a way for EU citizens to decide who they wish to see as representatives of their own views.

When was the last EU election?
In contrast to the parliamentary, regional and municipal elections, which are held every four years, there are EU elections every five years. This means that the last EU election was in 2019.
More specifically, it was on Sunday 26 May that the elections to the European Parliament took place in Sweden.

Who can vote in the 2024 EU elections?
You have the right to vote in the Swedish EU elections in 2024 if you have turned 18, no later than on election day, and are either 1) a Swedish citizen who is currently or has been registered in Sweden or 2) a citizen of an EU country, registered in Sweden and registered on the Swedish electoral roll no more than 30 days before election day.
When are the EU elections in 2024?
Between June 6 and 9, the EU elections take place across Europe. In Sweden, election day falls on Sunday, June 9.

As previously mentioned, there are EU elections every five years, which means that the next EU elections will take place in 2029.
