WhatsApp users can now use the feature to send higher resolution photos via messages.
The feature, which was first seen in the testing phase in June, was finally made available to all users. WhatsApp users can now use the ability to send higher resolution photos on all platforms via messages.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg made a statement
The news was announced by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and starting today, the feature will begin rolling out to iOS, Android, and web versions, respectively. This news, announced by The Verge, states that although the feature has started rolling out today, it may take several weeks for all users to gain access to it.
This newly added feature allows users to send both existing photos and images they have taken within the app. Users can access this feature by accessing the picture menu. If available, a new “HD” icon will appear in the top menu section next to editing tools such as cropping, adding stickers, adding text and drawing.
How will the new feature be used?
By clicking the HD button, users can choose between two different resolution options. The HD option has a resolution of 3840 x 2160, while the standard option keeps the 1600 x 900 resolution. While this resolution option has been tested on iOS, resolution may differ in Android and web experiences. Sending high resolution pictures is of course a big improvement.
While WhatsApp hasn’t provided precise details on what types of actions are taken here, it’s likely that a compression process has been applied. However, the ability to share higher resolution photos when needed is a big improvement. What’s more, it’s quite interesting to note that Meta is also working on the ability to send HD videos.
Users who want to try this new feature should definitely update their WhatsApp applications. If the feature isn’t visible yet, it may take several weeks for the update to fully reach all users. For those who have not used WhatsApp before, now is a great time to give it a try, as the platform offers a lot of features. This update will also be very advantageous.
