What to do when leveling up? Tips for leveling

Getting a new level is always a reason to celebrate in Baldur’s Gate 3. However, the many possibilities are often simply overwhelming, especially for beginners. MeinMMO helps you so that you are not overwhelmed when leveling up.

What should I watch out for when leveling? It depends on what class you’re playing and what level you’ve just reached. Each of the 12 classes in Baldur’s Gate 3 has different possibilities and depending on the level you have more features to choose from. So 5 important points to get you started:

  • You automatically get more life points.
  • Every 4 levels you can choose a talent.
  • Spell classes receive new spells at each level.
  • In the first 3 levels you usually choose a specialization.
  • For some classes, nothing happens at certain levels.
  • You level up through experience points that you get by killing enemies and completing quests. Remember that in Baldur’s Gate 3 you can only level up to level 12, after that you can’t go any further. It also makes a difference whether you only level one class or multiple classes.

If you opt for “multiclassing”, i.e. the combination of several classes, you have more options, but they go less deep. With our expert knowledge from D&D and role-playing games, we try to clarify some of the most important questions for you.

I went up a level – what do I have to do?

First of all: congratulations! Leveling is one of the best things that can happen to you in the game. So you dive deeper and deeper into the insanely cool classes and can shape your character according to your own ideas.

The good news first: most of the time you don’t have to pay much attention to it. You get life points automatically and most of the default settings have already been made. If you don’t want to think too much, just pick something you like and click “next.”

At certain levels, however, you must make important character choices that can have far-reaching implications for future development. Such things include:

  • talents
  • attribute points
  • Magic
  • Class Specializations
  • Talent or Attribute Points – Which Should I Choose?

At levels 4, 8, and 12, each class gives you the opportunity to choose a talent. Baldur’s Gate 3 offers you a bunch of options here, but in some cases they differ from the templates in the book.

For beginners, the following applies here: if you are not sure, simply select the increase in attributes (point at the top). You will then receive 2 points that you can distribute freely. But here are a few things to note:

  • Your character’s main attribute is marked with a star
  • You can increase an attribute 2 times, or 2 attributes 1 time
  • You only get a bonus on throws for even values! The bonuses are:
  • Attribute 8 = -1 to die value
  • Attribute 10 = +0 to die value
  • Attribute 12 = +1 to die value
  • Attribute 14 = +2 to die value
  • Attribute 16 = +2 to die value
  • Attribute 18 = +3 to die value
  • Attribute 20 = +4 to die value
  • (you can’t get any further in a “natural” way)
  • The standard distribution of values is that you start with a value of 17 and one of 13. For beginners, it’s always a good idea to get these up to 18 and 14 and then always increase by 2 thereafter. Remember: odd numbers aren’t going to do you any good.

Talents are abilities that shape your character. There is no “template” here: choose what suits you best. However, the talents “Lucky” and “Tough” or “Resilient” are useful for all classes.

Tough is a talent useful for all classes.

New Spells – What suits my class?

Most classes also get the opportunity to learn new spells with every or almost every level-up. To do this, you learn spells of higher ranks at certain levels, which are usually stronger.

Nobody can really make the choice for you, but with a few key points you can more easily decide which spells you want to learn:

  • Does the spell suit my class and specialization? Then take him.
  • Does the spell fit into the “build” I’m thinking of? Try him.
  • Plan ahead: having the same spell multiple times in the party doesn’t make sense in most cases.
  • You can also cast many spells with higher level slots. That means if you don’t have a spell you like at spell rank 2, take something and cast stronger rank 1 spells instead.

Some classes, like the sorcerer, can also swap a spell every level. If you find you don’t like a spell or never use it, switch to a new one.

Keep in mind that classes like clerics and casters can change their prepared spells at each rest. Here you are not bound to a choice as much as, for example, mages and bards.

Classes and Subclasses – Which Should I Choose?

The possible variations for each class can differ significantly from the original class. A sword bard, for example, hardly ever uses magic, except to strengthen himself. A trickster villain, on the other hand, suddenly casts magic all the time.

When choosing subclasses, schools, paths and the like, make sure that you don’t “obstruct” the group too much. A healthy mix of melee fighters and long-range fighters is usually best.

You don’t necessarily need a “tank” and a “healer”, but it is advisable, especially for beginners, to build such roles. Make your fighter or barbarian as steadfast as possible and let your cleric prepare healing spells. If you are more experienced, you can also try more.

Otherwise, it doesn’t matter which subclass you choose. Take what you think is coolest – that’s the most fun way to play the game. If you still want to “minmax”, you can find our Tier List with the best classes and subclasses in Baldur’s Gate 3 here.

Tip for beginners: try the fighter.

Help, I lost my skills! What now?

Well, uninstall the game and cry in the shower. Joking aside, Baldur’s Gate doesn’t penalize you for making a wrong choice. In the camp you will find the NPC “The Withered One.” He can help you for a small fee of 100 gold.

You reset all your talents and set points there and can redistribute them from level 1 onwards. In principle, you start the character creation from scratch, you can even redistribute your class and attribute points from the start.

The XP you have accumulated will remain – only the points will be refunded. You then have the same level with the same progress as before.

So don’t worry too much about what to choose when leveling. Instead, enjoy the huge freedom that Baldur’s Gate 3 offers and try it out. You can easily find 100 gold at the next goblin.
