The 2001 Oscar-winning sandal film epic Gladiator starring Russell Crowe is getting a sequel. After two decades, Ridley Scott returns to the sands of the arena to follow up on his hit. Ridley Scott’s sequel: What is Gladiator 2 about?

The biggest question after the epic ending of Gladiator is of course: What else can be told in part 2? Maximus has avenged the death of his family and is now allowed to roam through golden fields of barley in the afterlife. Does it really need a sequel?

According to Deadline, it was clear early on that Gladiator 2 would not simply tell the story of a new arena fighter, but instead “at a logical point” would tie in, because according to the director “there are enough components in the first film that we can continue with”. Supposedly the Gladiator sequel 25-30 years after part 1 play (i.e. around the year 200 AD), as reported by World of Reel. the new main character is therefore Luciusthe nephew of adversary Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) and son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen).

On Reunion with Maximus Ridley Scott nevertheless kept an open mind : “He’s dead. But there’s a way to bring him back. I don’t know if that will happen.”

When will Gladiator 2 be in cinemas?

In a Deadline interview in 2021, Ridley Scott stated that Gladiator 2 was already written. It was to be his next project after Napoleon. Filming for Gladiator 2 is now set to begin in May 2023. Which means the sandals movie sequel at the earliest end of 2024 will come to the cinemas.

A prequel or sequel (or both in one film) was already being discussed in 2001. But numerous ideas and screenwriters failed in the task. Paramount secured the rights to the sequel in 2006, and in 2018 the studio announced it had given the project the green light. In this way, a team could finally be assembled in front of and behind the camera.
