What is the purpose of the plasma membrane

The plasma membrane, also called cell membrane, refers to the thin protective layer enveloping each cell in the body.

The plasma membrane is made up of two layers of lipids, fats associated with different proteins carrying out roles in receiving information or transporting molecules. The plasma membrane forms a protective barrier between the interior of the cell and the rest of the organism. It only allows substances to pass into the cell which it needs to function. The plasma membrane is thus the main guarantor of exchanges between cells and the rest of the body.
