106 years of Finland and its independence were celebrated yesterday at the Presidential Palace in Helsinki with a total of around 1,700 guests.
There were also many athletes among the invited guests at the castle’s celebrations. The party saw, among other things, the recent rally world champion Kalle Rovanperäa fitness athlete Pernilla Böckerman and a pole vaulter Wilma Murto.
The captain of the entire Finnish national tennis team had also arrived at the Independence Day reception Jarkko Nieminen under. The tennis men made it all the way to the semi-finals in the final Davis Cup tournament held in Malaga. The place in the World Cup semi-finals is the greatest achievement in the history of the Finnish national tennis team.
In terms of sports, the most talked about thing of the evening was the naming of the successful Finnish national tennis team. The national team lacks a nickname, like the men’s basketball team Susijeng, the football team Huuhkaj or the ice hockey team Leijon.
Huhkaji’s all-time best scorer Teemu Pukki suggested the nickname “Gasells” for the team in an interview with at Linna’s party. Puk thinks the name shows how fast tennis players are.
– They are pretty sharp guys, Pukki reasoned.
However, the name is the same as the rap group Gazelle. However, it didn’t hinder the band, because Gasellit humorously commented in Urheilu’s Instagram post that he was ready for a trade and could therefore change his name to the Finnish national tennis team.

Harri Heliövaara says Gazellit is the best suggestion so far. However, the team is hoping for more suggestions from the fans.
– This was the first time I heard this proposal, but it is the best so far.
In the chat poll for Linna’s party commissioned by , the names suggested for the team included: Lynxes, Tennarit and Squirrels.
The President of The Republic of Finland Sauli Niinistö and his spouse, Dr Jenni Haukio was his own name favorite among the suggestions.
– Squirrels are fast, so Squirrels would be a suitable name for that, Niinistö answered.
