James Webb is a space telescope, just like the well-known Hubble. Launched in 1990, Hubble remains one of the largest and most versatile space telescopes and has taken an incredible amount of images of the cosmos. Scheduled to last at least 15 years, it has already exceeded 32 years and could last until 2030 or 2040. The James Webb Space Telescope was therefore not designed to replace it, but to complement it. It is the largest space telescope ever created, with a primary mirror of 6.5 meters. It was launched on December 25, 2021 and placed in orbit around the Lagrange point L2, at a distance of 1.5 million kilometers.
