A simple tip from Scandinavia would allow couples to have much better quality sleep.
50% of French people sleep in pairsaccording to the National Institute of Sleep and Vigilance (INSV) and 41% of them would prefer to sleep alone, particularly for the sake of comfort. “I published a paper in 2005 showing that sleeping with a partner caused about a third of your sleep problems. When the person next to you moves, you move, when they wake up, you wake up; when she snores, you are annoyed […] The beds are pretty good at cushioning movements, and it’s actually blowing cold air or the tugging of the blanket which will probably wake you up”explains Dr Neil Stanley, sleep specialist in his book How to Sleep Well. It’s not a secret, bed sharing is not always fun and has disadvantages. But good news, a method, very widespread in the Nordic countries (Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Iceland…) would improve the sleep of people who sleep in pairs. Nicknamed “Scandinavian sleep” (or “Scandinavian sleep method”), the principle is very simple: have two small quilts distinct instead of one and the same quilt. And its benefits for sleep are numerous:
→ Being able to be a little freer in his movements
→ Feel more independent at night and be able to get up at night or wake up before the other without being afraid of bothering him or waking him up
→ Power regulate your body temperature (which plays a crucial role in the quality of sleep) more easily. Feel less hot or cold than with a duvet for two.
→ Choose two duvets of different thickness: one weighted, one thermal, one thinner…rather than having to agree on a model that does not necessarily meet the needs of both.
“The Scandinavian Sleep Method Saves Relationships! When we first got married, we had trouble sleeping comfortably. My husband’s grandparents lived in Norway for a few years, and they kept doing this , so we tried! We never went back“, affirms in a video published on TikTok, a user who is a follower of this flagship principle of hygge, the Danish way of life which allows you to live happier.
Steps to adopt the Scandinavian sleep method
- Place a double fitted sheet on the mattress
- Arrange the 2 duvets (single or double, as you wish) on each side
- Let the comforters overlap in the center of the bed and hang on either side of the bed
