The former reality TV candidate announced on her social networks that she had undergone a particular operation: ovarian drilling. What does it consist of? Why is it done? The answers of Dr. Marc Even, gynecological surgeon at Pointgyn and at the Foch hospital in Paris.
Suffering from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) which reduces her chances of getting pregnant naturally, the former candidate of “Angels of reality TV” underwent a surgical procedure called “ovarian drilling”. The objective: a microperforation of her ovaries in order to restore their normal functioning as much as possible.
What is polycystic ovary syndrome?
Polycystic ovary syndrome affects 10% of women in France. “These women have an excess of male hormones, and a high ovarian reserve” first explains Dr. Even. But if the ovarian reserve is high, why are the chances of pregnancy low? “This is because these women’s follicles, although numerous, are actually immature.” adds the specialist. “Normally, in women, the follicle increases in size to reach 20mm between the beginning of her cycle until the moment of ovulation. There, in these patients, their size does not move.
Generally, women affected by this syndrome will have disturbed cycles, which can be very long or even suffer from amenorrhea (absence of menstruation).

What is ovarian drilling?
“For young patients, between 20 and 30 years old, and presenting a desire for pregnancy, we can offer them ovarian drilling, which is a microperforation of the ovaries. adds Marc Even. It is then necessary to check that the patient has normal fallopian tubes, that the spouse also has normal sperm as well. “We check that all the conditions to promote a natural pregnancy are present. summarizes the surgeon.
This surgery is performed under laparoscopy for one hour. The patient’s ovaries will be punctured six to eight times each. Then, the operation taking place on an outpatient basis, the patient will not be hospitalized. “We don’t know what the exact mechanism is, but we see after this operation that it decreases hyperandrogenism in patients and that it restores regular cycles to them.” further indicates the specialist.
Increased chances of pregnancy
The chances of spontaneous pregnancy are also increased by 50%, according to Marc Even. Unfortunately, for Aurélie Dotremont, the doctors discovered during the intervention that her fallopian tubes are damaged by an old infection, which almost eliminates her chances of getting pregnant naturally. The fight to have a child therefore continues for the young woman.
