The genotype is the set of genetic characteristics of an individual. The genes of a living being are normally found in all members of its species.
However, there are several versions of each gene. These different versions of the same gene are called alleles. This gives extremely high different combination possibilities between genes. Each genotype is thus usually unique, except in exceptional cases such as monozygotic twinning. (“identical twins”). We therefore often refer colloquially to the genotype as the “genetic identity card” of an organism.
