Don’t throw anything away! Until the end of February, a French association is offering to explore the packaging of our everyday products from all angles. A participatory science project open to all, which aims to challenge manufacturers on the environmental impact of containers. So, it’s time for the “scan party”?
Carried out in partnership with the Ecological Transition Agency (Ademe), the operation “Full pot on the packaging” started on January 12. Orchestrated by the association “Open Food Facts”, it proposes to keep the packaging of food products that we buy and consume at home (empty yogurt pots, cardboard pasta boxes, etc.) aim ? Study them from every angle.
Shapes, materials, weight, recyclability… Nothing is left to chance, everything must be inspected. But, be careful, the exercise could prove to be more difficult than it seems! For example, you will have to learn to decipher the content of the labels attached to the products, which is not always an easy task. Some packaging also mixes two materials (for example cardboard and plastic) and it will therefore be necessary to think about dissociating them before proceeding with the “autopsy”. If you have a food scale at home, you can also push the experiment further by indicating the weight of your empty packaging.
Anyone wishing to participate can join in the experience: simply download the Open Food Facts application, then scan the packaging and fill in the product sheets. The information collected by citizens via the smartphone application will then be published in open data. “They will help support eco-design, the reduction of over-packaging or even the deployment of environmental labeling on food products”, specifies the association carrying out the project.
