The foundation for BMW was laid with the founding of the aircraft manufacturer Otto Flugmaschinenfabrik in 1910.
In 1916, the company changed its name to Bayerische Flugzeugwerke or BFW, which translates to Bavarian Aircraft Factory.
However, it was only in 1922 that they bought an engine manufacturer by the name of BMW, and then also adopted the famous name.

Bavaria is the region in southern Germany where BMW was founded, and still has its home today.

Technically, the name is grammatically incorrect, as the words Motoren and Werke should really be written as one word and not spelled separately.

Built first car in 1928
BMW entered the automobile industry in 1928, when it acquired Automobilwerk Eisenach, which produced the British small car Austin 7 under license under the name Dixi.
The following year, the BMW name ended up on a car for the first time, when Dixi was renamed BMW 3/15.
The brand’s first completely self-developed car was launched in 1932, and was called the 3/20.

Anyone who has thought about what BMW stands for has perhaps also thought about what the classic round logo represents.
It is often claimed that the blue and white fields in the center of the logo are a legacy of the company’s roots in the aerospace industry, and that they represent a propeller spinning in a blue sky.

However, this is a myth, and probably originates from a 1929 advertising poster in which the BMW logo is projected onto a spinning airplane propeller.
Instead, the blue and white colors, just like the company name, are a tribute to the home state of Bavaria and its flag with the same color theme.
