Horror struck Djerba and Tunisia on Tuesday May 9, 2023. In the evening, a gendarme opened fire near the Ghriba synagogue, the oldest in Africa, killing at least four people according to a first official report and injuring nine others. The tragedy, which occurred on the small island located east of the Tunisian coast, cost the life of a Frenchman, present at the scene as a pilgrimage of people of the Jewish faith ended. At this stage, the French Foreign Ministry did not communicate but its Tunisian counterpart indicated that this national was 42 years old. His identity has not been disclosed. He was the victim of a gendarme who, after first killing a colleague, opened fire indiscriminately on visitors to the synagogue, killing another person (a 30-year-old Tunisian). After also wounding nine people (five gendarmes and four faithful), the assailant was shot dead by the police.
