A wave of very strong heat is gradually settling in France, with temperatures that should flirt with 35 degrees in the shade in the southwest. Difficult during these increasingly frequent episodes to know what to wear to avoid any inconvenience caused by stifling heat. Materials, colors, accessories… Here are the golden rules to follow to combine style and comfort despite the heat wave.
Linen and hemp, the basis
The choice of materials is obviously essential to tackle each season, and even more so during periods of cold and hot weather. Exit materials that stick to the skin, reveal unwanted halos, or promote perspiration, like many synthetic materials, make way for naturally breathable, absorbent and anti-odor textiles (yes, that exists), such as linen and hemp. They prove to be true allies throughout the summer period thanks to their thermoregulatory properties, evacuating body heat throughout the day. The icing on the cake, these two vegetable and natural materials also absorb moisture, avoiding any disappointment related to perspiration.
Less known for its breathable properties, cotton is also a material you can deal with during those sweltering times. Bet on its lighter variants, such as veil or muslin, which will allow you to approach this heat wave episode without fearing the slightest disappointment. Among the other materials that will allow you to brave the heat in style, Tencel, obtained via the cellulose of certain trees such as eucalyptus or bamboo, will do the job perfectly.
Priority to white and yellow
The darkest colors should be avoided in the event of strong heat waves, as they tend to absorb the sun’s rays and therefore increase the heat felt. It is strongly advised to turn to white clothes, especially for tops, but (don’t worry!) this is not the only option.
In study dated 2020, a team of Japanese scientists exposed to the sun – at an estimated temperature of 30 degrees – nine torsos of models dressed in polo shirts of different colors to determine which ones to favor in the event of a heat wave. White obviously came out on top, but the study showed that yellow, gray, red, and even purple, could do just fine during such heat waves.
Pastel tones also appear to be a good alternative since they do not absorb the rays, and allow you to afford certain clothing fantasies that white does not allow. As for the aficionados of black – there are many of them – the day will undoubtedly be longer (and warmer), so to reduce the feeling of discomfort, bet above all on loose and light clothing.
