In an incident in India last October, a newborn girl removed eight embryos from her stomach.
After the baby was born, her family suspected her belly was swollen. His family took him back to the hospital, worried that he had a tumor due to his abnormally bloated stomach. Paramedics performed a CT scan of the newborn and saw images suggestive of a tumor.
EVERYONE THOUGHT A TUMOR
The newborn baby girl was later transferred to Rani Children’s Hospital and Research Center in Ranchi city. In the examinations performed there, it was revealed that the ones in his stomach were not tumors, but were parasitic twins.
After the scan results came back, the doctors removed a total of eight underdeveloped embryos in the girl’s abdominal cavity. The paramedics kept the baby under observation for 21 days before performing an operation to remove the embryos. The operation, which lasted an hour and a half, was successful. Such cases are considered extremely rare and only occur less than 1 in every million births.
WHAT IS PARASITE TWIN?
Parasitic twin is the condition in which one of the abnormally developed conjoined twins continues to live by being placed on top of or inside the other healthy one.
