What physical activity should you choose to keep your New Year’s resolutions? According to a study, the 12-3-30 method, based on walking on a treadmill, should be the fitness training that will mark 2023.

For fitness enthusiasts, sports practices are combined (almost) to infinity. However, some activities are more popular than others. In a study*, Puregym ranked the twenty most popular workouts according to Google Data.

    The 12-3-30 method

In strong progress, with an increase of 308% compared to previous years, the 12-3-30 method is at the top of this ranking. As a reminder, these figures are the settings to be recorded on a treadmill. The incline is adjusted to 12, the speed to 3 and the session lasts 30 minutes. Created by influencer Lauren Giraldo, this routine, to be performed five times a week, is very popular on the TikTok social network. “Walking is already a fantastic cardiovascular activity, and the addition of incline creates a greater increase in heart rate – which improves cardiovascular health and endurance,” says PureGym personal trainer Laura Eaton in a post. communicated.

In second place is Crossfit, with an increase of 173.21% in one year. Created in the early 2000s in California, this high-intensity sport can be practiced alone, but in general the “Wod”, namely the “Workout of the day” (training sessions) are done with several people. This helps to federate a community around training. The promised effects of this sport are fat loss, muscle gain and strength.

    The return of soft sports

Far from the search for performance, soft sports are well represented in this ranking. In fourth position, we find the “75 soft” with an increase of 124% compared to the previous year. Launched in response to the “75 Hard Challenge”, a physical and mental program offering high-intensity sports lessons followed by a strict diet, to be followed for 75 days, the “75 soft” leaves more freedom. It is based on 4 rules: do 45 minutes of sport a day, eat healthy and drink alcohol only on special occasions, read 10 pages of a book a day and finally drink three liters of water a day. In this top 20, Pilate recorded an increase of 83.60% and yoga was up 49.72%.

One of the big losers in this ranking is the world of virtual fitness. After its boom during the Covid-19 pandemic, distance courses are no longer a dream. “Virtual fitness” challenges drop 45.76% and workout searches drop 45.45%. This does not prevent Netflix and Nike to team up to offer sports lessons since the beginning of 2023.

Methodology: PureGym compiled 125 different fitness trends by tracking all of the ones mentioned in news articles covering “fitness trendsover the period 2019-2022. Trends were then analyzed using Google Keyword Planner. Monthly global search volumes on Google in July-September 2021 and July-September 2022 were taken into account, and the percentage increase/decrease for each trend was calculated to provide the final ranking.
