Parents whose child has just died are faced with grief that is always difficult to cope with. A financial aid is granted to them ranging from 1082 euros to 2163 euros depending on the number of dependent children.

Allowance in the event of the death of a child: what conditions?

The child’s death must have occurred less than two years ago. Please note that the allowance is due in the event of death occurring from the 20th week of pregnancy and before the child’s 25th birthday.

How much is the benefit in the event of the death of a child?

The allowance in the event of parental bereavement varies between 2163 euros and 1082 euros according to the number of dependent children and the parents’ income at the time of the child’s death. In 2024, 2022 resources are taken into account. This allowance aims to cover part of the costs linked to expenses following the death of a child under 25 years old.

  • For a child, the amount of the allowance in 2024 is 2163 euros if income does not exceed 93,676 euros and 1082 euros if income is greater than 93,676 in 2022.
  • For two dependent childrenthe amount of the allowance is 2163 euros for income up to 99,922 euros and 1082 euros if they are higher.
  • For three dependent children : 2163 euros for income up to 106,168 euros and 1082 euros if income exceeds this sum.
  • For 4 dependent children, income must not exceed 112,414 euros (amount of 2,163 euros). If the resource ceiling is greater than 112,414 euros, the amount of the allowance is 1,082 euros.

What are the steps to take to benefit from this assistance?

  • If you are a recipient, you do not have to take any action since the civil status services inform the Caf of the death and the allowance will be paid to you automatically.
  • If you are not a beneficiary, you must send the forms made available to you on the page My child diedaccompanied by the requested documents, by mail to the Caf in your department or by using the “send a document” function that you will find in the My Account area.
  • The CAF then pays the allowance within 15 days after have received all the documents.

Can we receive other family benefits in the event of the death of the child?

Following the death of the child, certain family benefits continue to be paid under certain conditions, in particular for the birth bonus (and the basic allowance), the adoption bonus (and the basic allowance), the shared education benefit and the back-to-school allowance.
