So it is Jörgen Persson who is Gandalf and the hobbits are Truls Möregårdh, Kristian Karlsson and Anton Källberg.
What an insanely exciting team match it was against Japan, what a crazy twist and what wonderful scenes of joy afterwards!
To make another film reference, you can see in front of you how Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi, JO Waldner and Mikael Appelgren, sit at home and send power to the boys in Paris.
Then the euphoria and celebration will be a little extra
There is and will be something extra when teams are successful, the euphoria and celebration will be a little extra. There are more to enjoy and eat.
The team competition in table tennis made its debut at the 2008 Olympics, so the former golden generation never got the chance to play, or win, it. They tore down their walls in the WC and did the “impossible” when China was defeated in the team WC, 4 April 1989 in Dortmund.
If today’s Swedish team were to succeed in that feat, it would, just like then, be a feat in the truest sense of the word.
Blown by the judges
Otherwise, most things went against Sweden during yesterday. The handball men were once again blown away by the judges after a really good effort against the big favorite Denmark. But now they fell with the odd goal in the quarter and the medal chance is gone. So there were THREE Danes in the goal area when Oscar Bergendahl went for the equalizer in the final seconds of the match! Horrible!
Jonna Malmberg was second seeded in wrestling’s 53kg class, but she also smoked in the quarterfinals.
Sweden’s youngest participant, skater Hampus Winberg, missed the final in park by a few measly tenths. The 18-year-old made two really sharp qualifying runs but was not awarded by the judges. The French crowd actually booed the score he got and thought he deserved more.
Discus king dethroned
Daniel Ståhl is dethroned as discus king. He finished only seventh in a high-class final which was won by Jamaican Roje Stona with a throw of 70 meters, a new Olympic record. Ståhl “only” reached 66.95.
It’s a bit funny with Ståhl, because he is usually more positive and easier to interview when things are going badly. Yesterday he was very happy and chatty despite his worst ever result in a major championship final. Other times when he wins and breaks records, you can hardly get a meaningful word out of him.
Thank you, I know, the ping pong gang
Thank you, I know, the ping pong gang. There, the old legends have raked for the new generation in a fantastic way, both as examples and with knowledge.
Sweden will most likely face China in the team final on Friday, they face France in the semi-final today.
In China, Jörgen Persson is called “Old Pe”, the old Persson. A tribute and a sign of knowledge, wisdom and power.
