The Municipality of West Elgin’s recreation committee and its volunteers helped create an amazing all-day family experience for residents and families on Canada Day 2024.

A free swim at the Rodney Pool kicked off the celebrations with a huge splash.
The opening ceremonies at 3 p.m. featured greetings from West Elgin’s mayor, Richard Leatham, who received a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday to honour his 80th circle around the sun. MP Karen Vecchio, MPP Rob Flack, Elgin Warden Ed Ketchabaw and recreation committee members provided greetings, while municipal summer student Ben Carr led the assembled crowd in the singing of O Canada.
A variety of family-focused events and demonstrations helped make for a delightful, and laughter-filled Canada Day celebration.
While enjoying snacks from the several on-site food trucks, attendees could visit the West Elgin Fire Department’s display, get their faces painted or watch entertaining dance displays from Dance Essence, Hundreds of children enjoyed the playground and splash pad and the bouncy castle, as well as ice cream. The Kiwanis Club of Rodney took part in the festivities, distributing 82 books from it during the afternoon at the pavilion.
St. Mary’s Hall hosted the evening’s annual Knights of Columbus fish fry, with guests joining the long lineup to await their delicious meals. More than 300 dinners were served by the event’s volunteers.
Canada Day tour concluded with a dazzling fireworks display at Miller Park. Hundreds of people — a large and appreciative crowd — were thrilled by the spectacular show.
