Well-known tech YouTuber explains why he can’t recommend the new ASUS ROG Ally X to anyone

With the ROG Ally X, ASUS has introduced the successor to its popular handheld. Linus Tech Tips has already had a look at the model, but his enthusiasm is cautious. And it’s not because of the good performance.

Linus Sebastian is one of the most well-known YouTubers in the tech sector with his channel Linus Tech Tips. In a recently published video, he was able to try out the new gaming handheld from ASUS, the Rog Ally X. This is the official successor to the ROG Ally, which we consider to be one of the best gaming handhelds.

But Linus doesn’t want to recommend the new handheld from ASUS, even though he thinks that everything has gotten better compared to its predecessor.

What does Linus say about Ally X? The first impressions are very positive. According to Linus, ASUS has thoroughly redesigned the device and addressed many of the criticisms of the old model. Better battery life, better feel and new, modern ports such as USB-4 or an additional USB-C port. The new Ally X beats its predecessor in every area.

Linus accuses ASUS of lacking transparency with old model

Why can he still not recommend the device? From minute 10:20 in his video, Linus addresses the problems with the device’s SD card slot. With the ROG Ally X, Linus explains that ASUS has repositioned the card reader. But there is a much more extensive problem behind this:

  • Shortly after the release of the ROG Ally, some buyers discovered that the SD card readers tend to fail, potentially damaging the SD cards.
  • In July 2023, Asus confirmed the SD card reader issue and pointed out that it could be a temperature problem.
  • But ASUS apparently never officially solved the problem, according to our colleagues at TheVerge.
  • In his video, Linus addresses the problems and criticism and says quite clearly that he would have liked and would like to see “more transparency” from ASUS in the future. To this day, no one officially knows how many Ally devices were or still are affected.

According to Linus, ASUS has never dealt with criticism or problems very productively. If this really mattered to the manufacturer, then ASUS would have to “either [die Modelle] recall or treat as a precautionary measure.” He explains in detail:

And until this matter is resolved and ASUS has shown that it can be trusted again, it doesn’t matter how much I like the ROG Ally X. (…) Even if I would personally buy one, I am not able to recommend it, even though I would really like to.

And this is not the first time that ASUS has been criticized.

This is not the first time ASUS has been criticized by gamers and YouTubers

Tech YouTuber Gamers Nexus recently tested ASUS’ customer support and was suddenly asked to pay hundreds of euros for a repair. His opinion of the customer support was devastating and he said: “In our experience, Asus’ warranty service is absolute rubbish.”

In this context, ASUS had at least stated that it wanted to get to the bottom of the problems and investigate the complaints of other players. In the comments under Linus’ video, many also warned against the manufacturer.

The company’s reputation among many players has been damaged by its recent actions. This is also why Linus’ opinion is so reserved. And the problems apparently are not isolated cases, as Gamers Nexus found out: Tech YouTuber complains about customer service – gets countless answers from viewers with the same problem
