Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Because of a tweet, thousands believed that PietSmiet would become Mario’s German voice, but now the YouTuber is putting an end to the discussions.

Who is the person you are talking about? A post by Fabian Mario Döhla on Twitter, which he published on December 11, 2022, caused a stir.

Fabian Döhla is a well-known PR and social media manager in the gaming industry, working for companies such as Witcher development studio CD Projekt Red and SEGA.

Why did some people think Piet Smiet speaks Mario? In his December 11th tweet, Fabian Döhla congratulated Peter from PietSmiet for being the German voice of Mario in the upcoming Super Mario movie.

The film is scheduled to hit the cinemas on April 7th, 2023 and, contrary to what Fabian Döhla claims, will have Leonhard Mahlich as the German dubbing voice of Mario.

Leonhard Mahlich is known for various roles. In addition to his dubbing of the actor Chris Pratt – who sets Mario’s voice to music in the English original – Mahlich speaks, among other things, the German voice of the hero “Lúcio” in Blizzard’s shooter Overwatch.

What does PietSmiet say about this? In a video from December 14, PietSmiet addressed Fabian Döhla’s tweet and explained that the post had “fooled” thousands.

In the video, Peter says Fabian Döhla is a personal friend and the tweet is of course just “absolute nonsense”.

He himself thinks it’s pretty obvious that the post is a joke, especially since Döhla is “the best-known troll in the gaming industry.” As an example, PietSmiet shows a scene from the official presentation of the computer game award, in which Fabian Döhla wears hair curlers and has placed a sex toy in his background.

PietSmiet’s reaction to his good friend’s joke was corresponding. He was sitting on the couch when he read the tweet and just thought “Hah, good joke”. Then, says Peter, he went to sleep. But when he woke up the next day, he thought the world had gone mad.

“Didn’t realize it was Peter”

What discussions did the tweet spark? Twitter was filled with discussions and posts talking about “Piet Smiet voice actor for Mario”.

According to PietSmiet, there were many who congratulated him nicely, some who recognized the joke directly and others who were suspicious and questioned how much truth there was in the post. Other content creators, including Jay from PietSmiet, recognized the joke and joined in:

But many users believed the message and were not at all enthusiastic about it. The desire for a “real dubbing actor” is apparently great and there was a lot of criticism because users see it as a marketing measure for the film.

  • tyjuha via Twitter: “Where would you be if you used real voice actors as voice actors?”
  • FrostyKyouko via Twitter: “The Pietsmiet group has been with me since I was a child. I’m 22 now. To experience something like that is super exciting. I’m so happy for Peter!”
  • Augen² via Twitter: “I usually hate it when YouTubers dub films. But I liked what you hear in the trailer and wouldn’t have recognized that it was Peter. I’m curious.”
  • sethS_Zeugs via Twitter: There are so many good dubbing voices, why does it have to be YouTubers? Do you have so little faith in the film that you have to do something like that?”
  • According to Piet Smiet, there were even comments that said they would not see the film in cinemas because of this. Reason enough for Peter to share the wisdom at the end of the video not to believe everything that is said on the internet. After all, Döhla did not name a real source.
