He is one of Swedish handball’s greatest heroes.
Now the icon Per Carlén is breaking the silence about his cancer.
– It’s quite okay, he says to SVT.
Everyone in Swedish handball knows who Per Carlén is. He wrote Swedish sports history as one of the legendary “Bengan Boys” during Sweden’s heyday as a handball nation.
Carlén’s career
Carlén was for a time the handball player who scored both the most international matches and the most goals for the Swedish national team. The middle six is truly made up of our biggest blue-and-yellow handball heroes and won six championship medals with Sweden.

After ending his playing career, Per has continued in handball’s service as both a coach and TV expert. But a year ago, life took a completely new turn for the 63-year-old.

Per Carlén had problems with his intestines and sought treatment, then it turned out to be cancer. At first, the prognosis for the cancer diagnosis looked bleak, but the icon’s body responded well to the treatment.

Now he breaks the silence again about how things are going. During the SC final in handball on Tuesday evening, Carlén was on hand to give an update on his struggle.
– Yes, today it is quite okay. I just finished another three month chemo treatment and on Monday I have a return visit. Then we’ll have to keep our fingers crossed that it has cleared the body a little, he tells SVT at halftime of the final.
– It will be a bit like a reconciliation now. That said, I hope it’s pretty clean in the body now.

Unfortunately for Carlén, his Ystad, which he played for in 1991-2000, lost to Sävehof in the decisive final match. Ystad, who is trained by his Oscar Carlénthus had to settle for silver medals when Sävehof lifted the SM trophy.
