New Novus shows: 30 percent of Swedes more positive to the weapons industry since the invasion of Ukraine
Investors have taken a new position in companies linked to the weapons industry – and the trend seems to continue upwards. Figures from a new Novus survey show that every third Swedish has changed attitude in the defense industry’s favor.
“It is a question that shares many whether it is ethical or not,” says Philip Scholtzé, economist at Avanza.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine three years ago, the stock market skiing has been clear for companies in weapons production. In recent weeks, the shares have risen further, and according to Philip Scholtzé, an explanation may be that the United States has increased the pressure on Europe in defense issues.
– It will be a clear sign and the market then acts up these shares very strongly and that means that the share savers are accompanied, he says.
Another reason is that many investors experience the industry as clear.
– Many people read newspapers, watch TV and see that it is uneasy in the world and then you try to see how you can capitalize on it. Then it is a question that shares many whether it is ethical or not.
The Novus survey shows that 30 percent of Swedes have become more positive to the weapons industry since the invasion, while 49 percent did not change the position. Thirteen percent state that they are negatively set.
– Among private savers, it has been quite clear that the number of owners in these shares has increased a lot over the past three years. But among the professional investors, things have been a little slower, says Scholtzé and continues:
– If it moves up quickly, it can move up quickly so you have to go to yourself and have a risk -spread portfolio.
