Local media in California have reported that affluent people in the celebrity-dense state have a very high water consumption. Those who can afford it can also pay large sums of money for extra water, and can thus round irrigation bans. They can pay SEK 50,000-60,000 for a delivery.
– I have received calls from people in Beverly Hills who called and asked if we could water their plants. It’s tempting to make extra money, but I’m not doing that, says Andrew Sarvis, who works with water supplies in the state.
Future conflict
Most of the water consumption, about 70 percent, is accounted for by the agricultural sector. Brandon Jones, who supplies water to farms whose water has drained, believes that water will be a contentious issue in the future, between farmers and other water consumers.
– We must find a golden mean, he says.
