The United States confirms that it warned Russian authorities of a planned terrorist attack a few weeks ago, the White House said hours after the attack on a concert venue in Moscow in which at least 60 people were killed.

“Earlier this month, the US government had information about a planned terrorist attack in Moscow that would possibly target ‘larger gatherings’ in Moscow,” said Adrienne Watson, spokeswoman for the US National Security Council.

Watson said President Joe Biden’s administration acted in accordance with a long-agreed “duty to warn.” It involves the United States alerting countries or groups when it receives intelligence about specific threats to kidnap or kill multiple victims.
