Even in tougher economic times, many people plan to do something special on Valentine’s Day.
Dinner, flowers and physical expressions of love are high on the Swedes’ list.
But the wishes differ greatly between men and women, shows a survey from Aftonbladet/Demoskop.
Valentine’s Day, also called Valentine’s Day, is a holiday when many show appreciation for their loved ones with romantic gestures.
Swedes’ desire to celebrate love is great – just over a third of Swedes will celebrate the day, shows a new survey from Aftonbladet/Demoskop.
At the same time, Swedes are holding their wallets tighter in the face of an impending recession. Overall, the trade’s sales are estimated to fall by SEK 100 million, according to Swedish Trade.
Most people want to have dinner
Swedes’ opinions differ when it comes to what is at the top of the wish list for love gifts. Among both men and women, dinner is seen as the most important gift, closely followed by physical expressions of love.
Around ten percent hope to receive flowers – this is particularly important for women, where nearly 17 percent answer that they would rather have flowers.
Only two percent of men answer the same. But almost as many men as women want to give flowers as a gift.
Among men, physical expressions of love are important to around a fifth compared to women where 13 percent say the same.
Men spend more
More men than women say they have plans for this year’s holiday.
Almost half of the Swedes in the survey spend as much time planning for the holiday as their partner. Slightly fewer women than men say that their partner usually spends the most time on planning.
Among those celebrating, it is common to spend between 100 and 499 kroner. Two fifths of men and 16 percent of women state that they spend more than that.
That’s how the survey was done
The survey was carried out by Demoskop on behalf of Aftonbladet within the framework of the Inizio panel, which reflects the Swedish people.
The target group is the general public aged 18 and over. The survey includes 1,004 interviews during the period 9 – 13 February 2023 and is conducted as a web survey.
The selection is pre-stratified and weighted by age, gender, region and party in the previous election.

More men than women celebrate Valentine’s Day
In the survey by Aftonbladet/Demoskop, 41 percent of men answer that they plan to celebrate Valentine’s Day – among women, the corresponding figure is 33 percent.
• Among those planning to celebrate Valentine’s Day, 29 percent would prefer a dinner and 23 percent physical expressions of love.
• In the same group, 27 percent would also prefer to give a dinner and 18 percent would prefer to give physical expressions of love.
