Moderate leader and Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson warns Swedes not to be naive now.

– We must protect Sweden, Swedish lives and Swedish interests. We must not be naive. Neither in the fight against terrorism nor against the gangs. We must protect everything that we hold dear, he says.

Ulf Kristersson comes directly to the party meeting in Umeå from a commemoration in Brussels, where two Swedish football supporters were killed in a terrorist attack earlier this week.

– We meet in a noticeably dark time. Not since the Second World War has Sweden, Swedes and Swedish interests been exposed to so many and such great threats, he says.

– The trusting, bold, tolerant and internationally respected Sweden that we love. It is threatened and attacked by foreign terrorists – who commit heinous crimes against Swedish citizens.

Kristersson says he understands that many Swedes are now worried and afraid, frustrated and angry.

But the answer must be to protect the free and democratic society, he says.

– We intend to stand up for – and stick to – our own values. The values that define who we are and want to be. We will not change. It is not us who should adapt to them, says Kristersson.
